Model Development
I participate in many aspects of the development of future generation Earth System Models. I am presently a co-lead of GFDL’s OM5 effort for developing a next generation ocean and cryosphere model. As part of these efforts I contribute code to MOM6, test new ocean-physics parameterizations, enhance diagnostic capabilities for ocean models, and manage large numbers of development simulations. I also co-lead a project to develop a coupled MOM6-SHiELD-WW3 model for regional applications to study km scale air-sea interactions.
Current efforts include:
* OM5: My overview talk at GFDL’s 2025 lab review
* SHiELD-MOM6 coupling: Mouallem et al., 2025
* SHiELD-MOM6-WW3 coupling
Previous published models:
* GFDL’s CM4X Mode: Griffies et al., 2025a and Griffies et al., 2025b
* GFDL’s OM4 Ocean Sea-Ice Simulator: Adcroft et al., 2019
* GFDL’s CM4 Climate Simulator: Held et al., 2019
* GFDL’s ESM4.1 Earth System Simulator: Dunne et al., 2020
Modular Ocean Model 6
In MOM6 I have contributed code to improve many aspects of the code, particularly related to mixing and boundary layer parameterizations and surface wave effects. I am an active participant within the MOM6 development team.
WAVEWATCH III
In WAVEWATCH III I have contributed code to compute sea-state dependence wind stress parameterizations, Stokes drift information for coupled models, and have ambition to add more complete grid support for coupling to ocean models.
